Donald Max McClure, 92, passed away on March 15, 2021 at his La Junta home. He was born on September 4, 1928 in Hugoton, Kansas to Roy D. & Ethel (Manwarren) McClure. He married Helen Harper on September 20, 1952.
After graduating from high school he enlisted in the Air Force on January 30, 1946 and was honorably discharged on January 31, 1949. He attended Kansas State University and Denver University majoring in Civil Engineering. He was employed as Party Chief for Western Geographical which required a lot of traveling. They were in 17 different states until Dealey started school. At that time he leased the Enco Service Station in La Junta. Before starting his employment with the Railroad where he retired from Santa Fe in 1981 as an office Engineer.
Don’s enjoyed bowling and his highest game was 279. He was a huge fan of the Colorado Rockies. Some of Don’s hobbies included fishing, camping, reading Louise L’Amour books and going to Cripple Creek. His greatest joy was his family and grandchildren. Many great memories were made with his grandchildren on fishing trips they took together. He was a highly respected role model as a husband, father and grandfather. He has taken our hearts with him and will be greatly missed by his family.
Don has been a member of the First Southern Baptist Church for 64 years. He had been a member of the Kiwani Club. Don & Helen were on the dance committee at the Senior Center, where he served as President of the Board & Directors for one term.
He is survived by his wife of 681/2 years, Helen of the La Junta home; sister, Lois Hall of Elkhart, KS; grandchildren, Heather (David) Vowles, Cassie (Alfred) Gonzales, Chase (Ashlee) Frazier, Chance (Nichole) Frazier, Nathan Hurt, Eric Hurt, Robert Sheaks, Arnell Sheaks, Sheridan (Beth) Howe, and Rylea Jo Howe; son-in-law, Butch Frazier. He was preceded in death by his parents, children, Wendy Kari McClure, Clayton Del McClure and Dealey Frazier; brother, Roy McClure.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church with Pastor Brandon Mills officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in La Junta with Military Honors by the Rocky Ford Rifle Team, American Legion Post #8.
