Dorothy Grenard

Dorothy passed away at the age of 86 on November 7th, 2012 after an extended illness in Las Vegas. Dorothy lived most of her life in La Junta, Denver & Cañon City, Colorado.  She spent the last 4 years of her life in Las Vegas, Nevada near her daughter Beverly. 

Dorothy was born in La Junta Colorado on March 9th, 1926. Her parents were George Edgar and Adelaide (Bickel) Hine.   Dorothy went to elementary, jr. and high school in La Junta.  She was crowned Miss La Junta High in her senior year in 1944.  After graduation Dorothy entered the United States Army Nursing Corps  and received her RN degree at Presbyterian Hospital in Denver.  When her children were young she worked as an RN at Gates Rubber Company and Samsonite Luggage in Denver.  Dorothy and her children moved back home to La Junta in 1960.  While working as the Otero County Public Health Nurse in La Junta she met Garth Grenard who became the Otero County Clerk and later the County Commissioner.  They were married on September 15th, 1961.   She spent her career working in many capacities including hospital, school, Dr.’s office and head start nurse.  When Dorothy was 54 she attended Loretta Heights College in Denver to obtain her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing with a specialization in mental health.  She spent the last years of her career taking care of our veterans at the Fort Lyons Mental Health Facility in Las Animas, CO. After Dorothy retired she enjoyed traveling normally to unusual locations.  Honduras, Mexico, Guadalajara, Hawaii, and Europe.  Dorothy and Garth even spent 3 months on a cargo ship with a handful of other passengers traveling from port to port thru the South Seas. They traveled between Japan, Tonga Islands, New Zealand and Australia hauling everything from sheep to crops.  Dorothy loved meeting people from all over the world.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her older brother Eugene Hine, her 2nd husband of 35 years, Garth W. Grenard and one niece Lori Kuhn.  Dorothy is survived by her two children, daughter Beverly Lynn and her husband Jim Campbell of Las Vegas, Nevada and her son, Daniel and his wife JoAnn Grenard of Cañon City and their 2 boys, Christopher Grenard and his fiancé Kayla Stangis of Longmont and Jonathan Grenard of Pueblo.   She is also survived by her younger sister Marylyn (Paul) Kuhn and their 3 children Nancy, Mike & Mindy, nephews Steve and Jim Hine and his wife Doris.  Dorothy also leaves behind her and Garths grandchildren Greg (Sharon) Grenard, Sharon (Dave) Kline, Karen (Luke) Pommier all of La Junta and Gail (Garry) McClaine of Oro Valley Arizona and 11 great grand children and Garth’s son, Max Grenard and his wife Maxine of La Junta.

A small informal celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held in La Junta at the Peacock Memorial Chapel at 401 Raton Ave. on Saturday, November 17, 2012 starting at 10:00 AM followed by a short graveside service at the Fairview Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her parents.
