Nellie Burr, 95, of La Junta, passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at the Arkansas Valley Regional Nursing Care Center. She was born on September 24, 1913 to Calvin & Stella (Shockley) Grover in Erick, Oklahoma. Nellie was married to Alvoree “Wee” Burr, on September 25, 1929, in Lamar, Colorado; Alvoree preceded her in death on December 20, 1989.
Mrs. Burr-Nellie-Mom-Ma-Great Ma, as different ones called her, was an inspiration to those who spent time around her. She leaves her love of life and humor as a legacy; and challenges others to be content in whatever place you’re in. She proved this through her past 2 year’s residence at Nursing Care Center West by truly making it her home; the nurses and attendants were her extended family. She was a long time member of the La Junta Church of the Nazarene.
Nellie is survived by her children, Billy C. (Melba) Burr of Amarillo, Texas; Velva D. (Marvin) Powers of Lenexa, Kansas; Richard L. (Janet) Burr of Rocky Ford, Colorado; Bonita (Rod) Kitts of Ottawa, Kansas; half sister, Shirley Martin-Parker of Springfield, Colorado; one grandchild; 31 great-grandchildren; and 18 great, great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home & Arkansas Valley Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
