Phillip W. Peters

Phillip Warren Peters Sr., 80, stepped into eternity surrounded by family on November 22, 2013 at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center. He was born on May 14, 1933 in Hutchinson, KS.

Phill was preceded in death by family that raised him, aunt and uncle, Herbert and Essie Sargent and sister Phyllis McQuilliams.
Phill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joy Ann (Moore) Peters; sons, Pete (Debbie) Peters of Lamar, CO, Herb Peters of Leoti, KS, and Lance (Shauna) Peters of Pueblo West, CO; daughter, Leslie (Ed) Chavez of Lamar, CO. He loved being the grandpa to 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He also had very dear life long friends in Hoehne, CO and La Junta, CO.

Phill attended Wiley High School and graduated in 1951 and then went to Lamar Community College and earned his Associates Degree. He was then drafted by the Army and spent 2 years fighting in the Korean Conflict. When he returned from Korea he continued his education in Fort Collins at Colorado A & M where he earned his Bachelors degree. He later returned to Colorado State University and earned his Masters Degree.

Phill started his teaching career at Hoehne High School in the Vocational Agriculture field. He then moved to La Junta in 1970 to help launch vocational education at Otero Jr College as the Director of the CAVOC program. He touched many young lives over his career thru his teaching and his love of the game of baseball; he coached in the La Junta Babe Ruth Leagues for many years in the 70's and early 80's.

Phill retired in 1991 and started up a small business of trading sports cards; he enjoyed trading sports memorabilia during his retirement years. In 1998 when his wife Joy Ann retired they hit the road and went snow birding in Arizona and California with good friends from La Junta.

Phill was a family man of great character; he lived life to the fullest; enjoyed his family and especially annual camping trips to Fun Valley. Phill also enjoyed cooking, golfing, fishing, and playing family card games. He had a great sense of humor and will be missed by family and friends.

At his request there will not be any services.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Mountain Creek Home Health, 208 N. Main Street, Rocky Ford, CO, 81067 or to the Arkansas Valley Hospice, P.O. Box 408, La Junta, CO, 81050 direct or through the funeral home.
