Amy Deherrera

September 28, 1922 — August 6, 2015

Amy “Amada” Archuleta DeHerrera, 92, passed away on August 6, 2015 at the Sangre de Cristo Hospice in Pueblo. She was born on September 28, 1922 to Joseph Paul Archuleta & Frajelia Montoya in Pueblo. She married Ralph DeHerrera in January of 1937; he preceded her in death in 1997.

Amy grew up in Pueblo, Colorado. She was the youngest of three, and raised by her father and sister, Lydia, due to her mother’s passing when she was only seven. She attended Fulton Heights School and loved to swim in her free time with Lydia and her brother, Archie Archuleta. She survived the great depression by working side by side with her father and siblings.

Amy was united in marriage to the love of her life and life long dance partner, Ralph DeHerrera on January 13, 1937 in Pueblo, CO. Together they raised six beautiful children and spent their days farming thoughout the lower Arkansas Valley from Vineland to Swink, Colorado before settling and making Rocky Ford their home.

Amy was a great wife, mother and homemaker. She was a master in the kitchen; from cooking to canning, and preparing meals for as many family and friends as possible. She will be remembered for setting a beautiful table and turning an ordinary meal into a joyous occasion. Often she could be found surrounded at the dinner table hosting as many as 15 to 20 people in one meal. She also enjoyed the time she spent gardening and embroidering, but of all, she loved her family and they in turn, loved her.

Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren spent time with her frequently and she was always sharp as she remembered each and every family member’s birthday and she loved listening to and hearing about their daily life.

Amy lived in her home in Rocky Ford until the age of 91. She then left her home of 20 years and resided at the Life Care Center in Pueblo, CO. There she enjoyed playing bingo, making arts & crafts, and listening to entertainers.

Friends and faith continued to be important to Amy at the Life Care Center and she spent time each day with her special friends, Elizabeth, Rachel, Consuelo and Jewel and led the table in prayer prior to each meal. Her unwavering faith began with her baptism at Mt. Carmel Church in Pueblo, CO and continued in her youth and as a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Rocky Ford, CO.

She is survived by Lawrence (Maria) DeHerrera, Fred (Vita) DeHerrera, Erlinda (Jose) Lopez, Gloria Lopez and special daughter-in-law, Frances DeHerrera; 15 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 21 great, great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Carolyn DeHerrera, son, Toby DeHerrera, brother, Archie Archuleta, sister, Lydia Martinez, and great grandson, Toby DeHerrera, III.
