1959 – 2024 

Blas G. Torrez, 65, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2024 at his residence. He was born in La Junta, CO in 1959 to Miguel & Rosa (Guerrero) Torrez.

Blas, such a unique name for such a unique man. Passionate and kind wasn’t even the tip of the iceberg as to who he was. 

Someone once told me, “He always knows something about anything and everything.” And they were right. Anytime someone was in need he lent a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on and an open ear for anyone at any time.  

Blas was an avid cowboys fan and always loved to watch the Super Bowl with his close friends and family. Having a cold beer was one of his favorite things to do at a gathering or party. He had many favorite beers throughout his time, but Dos Equis was his favorite in the end. What he enjoyed more than a cold beer, was having everyone together for a good time. “BYOB” was his favorite term when he would reach out to everyone to come and have fun and relax.  

There’s no way to sum the crazy wild life that Blas Torrez had throughout all his years. We all know the many stories he would share, continuously, throughout the long drawn out nights that turned to chatting while the sunrise broke the horizon. “Hold on a second, one more thing before you go.” was his favorite phrase when he had just been talking for hours and the sun is coming out.  

In his later years, he spent most of his free time giving advice and motivational messages to his family members, coworkers, strangers, and anyone that would take his free advice. Whether in person or a text message he always knew exactly what to say to others to get them through what may have seemed like their most dreaded day.  

Blas never failed to tell people he loved them from the bottom of his big heart. He loved to travel with his wife, far & wide to visit family, especially his step children and their children. Together they would spend weeks at a time never seeming to get enough of them.  

If you ask me what his achievements are, that is a list that can go on forever but…. He always wanted to make sure his wife and daughter were taken care of and he did that by being a jack of all trades, but his main focus was on the 20+ years working for the Department of Corrections, reaching the Lieutenant position as his highest rank. Blas always talked about his DOC family, and would state, “We all go in together safely, and we are all going to get home safely.” He was always looking out for everyone and was never afraid to say it like it is. 

But his biggest achievement was, having his daughter. He was so proud of being her father and always finding ways to bring her up in conversation or have her around him for as long as he could. 

With him having known many people, in low and high places, near and far, there is no question that Blas will be deeply missed and remembered for generations to come. -Stepping graciously into the lives of many, we all love and will miss you Blas Torrez.  

Blas is survived by his wife Tamara Torrez; children, Sarah Torrez, Michael Ingram, Rachel (Seth) Garfield, and Elizabeth Clark; siblings; Catalina (James) Harris, Alvino Torrez, Ledia Ayala, and his 8 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and 5 brothers. 

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. both services at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish with Father Joseph Matitu officiating. Interment will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in La Junta.
