Charles A. Turner, 102, of La Junta, passed away on September 22, 2024, at the Evergreen Gardens Assisted Living. He was born on January 8, 1922, in Winter Haven, Florida to James and Ethel (Morlen) Turner. Charlie was stationed in La Junta during WWII with the army air corporal, there he met his future wife, Barbara Kendall at a USO Dance by asking for a cigarette. They married in 1945; she is preceded in his death on February 11, 2005.

After he was honorably discharged, he went to work at the La Junta Hardware as part of the family business. Charlie also worked at the La Junta Trading Company. During his life, he enjoyed helping others with home projects. He enjoyed gardening and collecting stamps. He also had an extensive collection of elephants. He was a Rotarian, a Paul Harris Fellow, and served as secretary for 50-plus years with perfect attendance. He enjoyed his twilight years at Evergreen Gardens. Most of all he enjoyed family.

Although his candle has been extinguished the light still shines in his family. Charlie is survived by children, Charles Dean Turner of Maplewood, Minnesota, Cindy (John) Vasco of Milliken, Colorado and Barbara Westbrook; grandchildren, Rob (Becca) Hunter, Brian Hunter, Jason Chapman, Eric Chapman and Caitlin (Aaron) Mohl; great grandchildren, Charlie, Henry and Anna Hunter; Zoe, Julian and Leah Hunter; Aason and Austin Chapman; Ireland Chapman and Jimmy and Iris Mohl.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, James and Ethel Turner; wife, Barbara (Kendall) Turner; son, James Turner and brother James Turner Jr.

Memorial Service will be held at Holy Cross St. Andrew Lutheran Episcopal Church in La Junta, Colorado on Saturday, October 12, at 1:00 p.m. Reverend Jen Shadie of the St. Peter’s Episcopal of Pueblo will be officiating. Refreshments will be at the church with inurnment at the Holy Cross St. Andrews Columbarium to follow.
