Donald R. Schauer

Donald R. Schauer, 79, of Colorado Springs, died at his home on January 27, 2015. He was born on September 25, 1935 in Fort Collins to Ralph Vincent and Angeline Ann (Michaud) Schauer. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School and graduated from Fort Collins High School in 1953. As a child Donald grew up working in the family businesses which included the Schauer Bakery and The Royal Bun/University Inn in Fort Collins. After graduation, Donald enlisted into the U.S. Army started his duty at the age of 17. He was stationed in Berlin when it was a closed city, and told many stories of his experiences.


After his active duty, Donald returned to Fort Collins and met his future wife of fifty five years Lela J. (Davis) Schauer. Donald settled in La Junta, where he worked for the City of La Junta from 1958 to 1968. Donald and Lela were married on December 19, 1959 in Las Animas. In November, 1968, Donald and Lela started Schauer Construction Company, Inc. and was active in the business until his death. They had moved to Grand Junction in 1982 and then settled in Colorado Springs in 1985.


He is survived by his wife, Lela J. Davis Schauer; son, Vincent and Stacey (Petramala) Schauer, son, Robert and Cheryl (Maddux) Schauer; grandchildren, Whitney Schauer, Kendall Schauer, Grant Schauer and Jessica Schauer; brothers, Albert and Rocki Schauer of Indio, CA, James and Kathy Schauer of Canon City, CO, and Jack and Betty Anne Schauer of Houston, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Vincent and Angeline Ann Schauer, in-laws, Bryon Eugene and Eary Lea Davis, sister, Lois Jean Harris, brother in-law, Elton Grant Harris, and several nieces and nephews.


The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and medical staff who cared for Donald over the past few years, and especially the Pikes Peak Hospice of Colorado Springs in his final weeks. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Pikes Peak Hospice in Donald’s name.


Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home & Arkansas Valley Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held on Friday, January 30, 2015, at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Both services will be at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Catholic Church in La Junta. Burial to follow at the Bent County - Las Animas Cemetery in Las Animas.
