Doris Marie (Ricken) Rizzuto, 87, passed away at her La Junta home on December 24, 2017, with immediate family present after a short illness and under the care of Sangre de Christo Hospice.
She was born in Dodge City, Kansas, the 8th of 10 children of William and Christine (Hanenkamp) Ricken. The children were the first generation born in the United States after their parents emigrated from Germany. The family later moved to a farm on Bent’s Fort Road while their father worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. She graduated from La Junta High School. Afterwards she attended cosmetology school in Pueblo and worked for many years at the Beauty Quest and as a result knew many people in the community. After her retirement she continued helping with “Happy Feet”, pedicures at the La Junta Senior Citizen Center. She was an active member of local Catholic parishes.
On October 24, 1950, she married Harold Rizzuto. They were married for 62 years prior to his death. They had two daughters, Cindy (Durant) Davidson of Colorado Springs, and Linda (Doug) Manley of La Junta.
In addition to her daughters, she is survived by 6 grandchildren, Chrissy (Robert) See, Katherine (Chris) Goodsell, Aaron (Dawn) Olson, Nicole (Jerry) Hasty, Becca (Chris) Ramirez, and LeeAnna (Alex) Fabian, 14 great-grandchildren, brothers Lee Ricken and Joe Ricken, cousins in both the United States and Germany, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and 7 of her siblings.
A Vigil Service and Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at Peacock Memorial Chapel in La Junta on Friday, December 29, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. with Deacon Doug Manley presiding at the Vigil and Neva Seaba leading the rosary. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish in La Junta with Doris’s nephew Bishop David Ricken of the Diocese of Green Bay, WI presiding and Monsignor James Koenigfeld of Sacred Heart Cathedral of Pueblo and Father Henry Wertin of Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish concelebrating. Interment will follow the mass at the Calvary Cemetery in La Junta.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Sangre de Christo Hospice in honor of Doris and thanks for their help.
