Dorothy Mae Thomas

Dorothy Mae Thomas, 92 of La Junta passed away on Friday, October 31, 2014 at AVRMC-Nursing Care Center.


Dorothy was born on June 12, 1922 near Plainview TX to Malcom G. Brown and Nellie E. Palmer Brown. She was the youngest of five including two Brothers & two Sisters. As a young girl she moved with her family to Norwood, CO where she grew up and attended school. She met Orville W. Thomas through her brother, MG, and they were later married on Oct. 1, 1937, in Telluride, Co. As a couple settled and raised their family in La Junta. Orville and Dorothy celebrated a happy union of 72 Years.


For 25 years after retirement, Orville and Dorothy entertained every Tuesday, at a different nursing home in the valley.


Dorothy was a devoted and loving, wife, mother and grandmother. A woman of many talents sewing, cooking, knitting and teaching. She was a member of La Junta Nazarene Church for a lifetime and taught Sunday School and VBS School. She was a proud volunteer for over 33 years: Loving advocate for her daughter Joyce Thomas and the programs at Inspiration Field; A Member of La Junta Senior Citizens; Holbrook Sportsman and RSVP.


Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Melvina (Tom) Skinner of Cheraw, Loretta (Abbas) Mirakhor, Dorothy (Larry) Eckhart and Miss Joyce Thomas all of La Junta; grandchildren, Debby (Scott) Howard of Rio Rancho, NM, Tom (Tracy) Skinner Jr. of Parker, Hassan (Diana) Mirakhor of La Junta, Scott (Norma) Eckhart of La Junta, Cyrus (Archana Shinde) Mirakhor of Westwood, CA, & Crystal (Scott) Cuckow of Ordway. She had 11 great-grandchildren, Brandon (Alissa) Manahan of Bakersfield CA, David, Madey, Adrey and Haley Eckhart of La Junta, Madison, McKinna, and Ben Cuckow of Ordway, Thomas and Keane Skinner of Parker. Fatimah Mirakhor of La Junta. She had one great, great-granddaughter, Layla Rae Manahan, Bakersfield.


She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Orville in 2009, her sisters & brothers, her grandson, Jerry Skinner, and her special sister-in-law, Zella Thomas Wilder.

Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home & Arkansas Valley Crematory is in charge of arrangements.



Funeral service will be Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene with Reverend Gordon Smith and Dr. Reverend Rex Williams officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home.
