Fidel J. “Joe” Chavez, 70, passed away on March 27, 2022, at the Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs. He was born on December 14, 1951, in La Junta to Fidel & Lily (Gauna) Chavez.
Early in life Joe attracted attention as he picked up his trumpet and provided music to people through much of the Front Range. Many people would stop him and reminisce about the old days of the dance where they enjoyed his music. He enjoyed people and was always quick with a smile or a joke.
A multitalented person, Joe pursued many interests during his life and never lost his love of learning something new. He loved music, woodworking, quilting and most recently photography. Joe was most comfortable when he was outdoors, enjoyed lawns, flowers and crops. He had a fascination of the machinery that it took to keep this valley thriving.
He was always willing to be of service to neighbors and others in the Rocky Ford community as a handyman. Joe was often seen on his riding mower on the way to helping family, friends and neighbors. He enjoyed tools and machines, spending time and imagination trying to figure out how things worked from the biggest engines to small do-dads. His quick wit and breadth of knowledge will be sorely missed by those lucky enough to share his time. Not only did he work tirelessly to overcome struggles in his own life but was quick to help ease the burden of others.
Joe treasured time spent with his family. He had q quirky sense of humor and a delight in the absurd. He had many roles that he filled for his family – son, husband, father, brother and uncle – and cherished all of them.
As per Joe’s request cremation has taken place and no services at this time.
