George Creston Mitchell

April 7, 1945 – March 30, 2024

George Creston Mitchell, 78, of La Junta, CO passed away peacefully March 30, 2024, at his La Junta home surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 7, 1945, in Trinidad, CO to Harper & Marjorie (Shaw) Mitchell.

George was raised at the ranch near Branson Colorado. He attended school at Branson and graduated with the class of 1963. He loved playing basketball, hunting arrowheads, hunting and fishing. George never met a stranger. He always enjoyed visiting, telling jokes and giving people a hard time. So, if he ever gave you heck, it was because he thought a lot of you. He was the first to give a helping hand no matter what the situation was.

The past few months had been quite a struggle due to his health issues, but he enjoyed his visitors and of course had a story or a joke to tell. Even though he had to use a lot of oxygen to accomplish his task and lately he liked to just hear people’s voices because it took too much energy for him to talk.

George was tired and ready to go and wasn’t scared. 9 years ago, when he had his first heart attack, he saw that green beautiful valley. The doctors brought him back and he kind of hated that, but we all got him for 9 more years. He was the Miracle Man. From that one night 9 years ago, the doctor said, “I give him a 1% chance of making it through the night.” The Doc sure didn’t know George.

George always wanted things his way. So it was in his style that on Saturday night, God decided he needed him, so that he could rise again with Jesus on Easter Morning. So today and tomorrow when we know George is no longer here in person, we know his presence will always be with us.

George is survived by his soul mate Peg; children, John Mitchell of Pueblo, CO; Charlie (Deana) Mitchell of La Junta, CO; Nakia (Neil) Fisher of La Junta, CO; and Shawnee (Kyle) Wait of Springfield, CO; siblings, Linda Winters of Oklahoma; Angialea (Jack) Goode of La Junta, CO; Jacqueline (Elmer) Stalford of Bristol, CO; sister in-law, Lee Mitchell of Gallup, NM; grandchildren, Kacee & J.C. Mitchell, Jackson Mitchell, Kamryn & Keo Fisher, Silvee & Kinlee Wait, and 3 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces & nephews also survive. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harper & Marjorie Mitchell; brother, Bill Mitchell, and 3 infant siblings.

Adios my friend!
