George Mose Russell

December 20, 1918 — December 5, 2012

George Mose Russell, 93, passed away at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center on December 5, 2012.  Mose was born December 20, 1918, to Christine and George W. Russell in Trinidad, CO.  Mose lived in the Kim area for most of his life, leaving only once to serve his country for four years as an Infantry-man in World War II.  Upon his return from the war, he married Opal (Allen) Russell on November 28, 1945.  Mose and Opal lived on their ranch in Kim, CO for 61 years.  Throughout his years, he enjoyed being a part of the community and was well known throughout the area. 

Mose was one of the original committee members that worked to get Colorado 109 paved between Kim and La Junta.  He also served on the Trinidad State Junior College board, the Kim School board, the Kim Baptist church board, the Southeast Colorado Power board, the Federal Land Bank board, and was the president of the Southern Livestock Association along with being a member of the Colorado Cattleman’s Association.  In 1991, Mose received the La Junta Ag Hall of Fame award.

Mose is survived by his son, Gary and daughter-in-law Maxine Russell; his sister Frances Briggs; granddaughters, Christine (Chris) Cochran and Stacie Russell; great grandchildren Hannah, Jacob, and Benjamin Cochran, Caleb and Sydney Riggenbach; other relatives and many friends.

Preceding Mose in death was his loving wife, Opal, in 2007, and brother-in-law Merold Briggs.

Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home and Arkansas Valley Crematory is in charge of arrangements.



Visitation will be at Peacock Memorial Chapel on Sunday, December 9th from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.  On Monday, December 10th there will be graveside services at Kim Cemetery beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Gail Allen of the Arkansas Valley Cowboy Church officiating.
