Gilbert K. Lucero

February 3, 1931 — January 16, 2014

Gilbert K. Lucero, 82, of La Junta, passed away on January 16, 2014, at the Arkansas Valley Medical Center. He was born on February 3, 1931, in Swink, to Joe Edino and Bruna (King) Lucero.


Gilbert was a construction worker for many years and retired after working as a business manager for Laborers International Union of North America Local 578. Bent’s Old Fort, Safeway, and the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center are a few of the many buildings he helped construct.


As a business manager, he traveled around the U.S. and Canada. He and his wife, Toni, owned East Side Second Hand Store and also owned and maintained several rental properties.


He was living at Evergreen Gardens Assisted Living at the time of his death. He was a member of the Resident Council at Evergreen.


Gilbert is survived by his two children, Ceci (Rick) Lucero of La Junta and Ted (Dianna) Lucero of Colorado Springs; grandchildren, Jordan Lucero of La Junta, Isaac (Hilary) Lucero of Tempe, AZ, and Hilary (Leo) Montilla of Tucson, AZ, sister-in-law Micaela, and special niece Margaret (Manuel) Mestas and many nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Antonia, sister, Julia, and brothers, Narciso (Mary), Vivian, Ralph, Juan, and Joe Lucero.


Gilbert is remembered as a loving father and grandfather and was well-liked by the many friends that he had. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a talent for making people laugh. He enjoyed visiting with friends at the Senior Center luncheons.


Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home and Arkansas Valley Crematory is in charge of arrangements.



Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Monday, January 20, 2014, at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Both services will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish with Father Matthew Wertin officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel.
