Harrison "Mac" Mccune

Harrison “Mac” McCune, 96, passed away on April 22, 2022, at the Crowley County Nursing Center in Ordway. He was born on February 15, 1926, to Vernon & Nona McCune in La Junta.
He was a member of the Koshare’s and troop 232 obtaining his Eagle Scout. After graduation he enlisted in the Navy during WWII serving on the SS Palo Alto.
He attended La Junta Junior College then transferred to Colorado A&M (Colorado State University) in Ft. Collins studying Civil Engineering.
He met Jan Trader in the summer of 1946 and in 1948 they were married.
Returning to La Junta in 1952 Mac owned a business called, McCune’s bookstore that would eventually become McCune’s Eastman Kodak store. One day the City Engineer came into the store and noticed Mac using a slide rule to calculate price markups. He asked him where did you learn that? After Mac told him, he said “I want to retire do you want to be the City Engineer?” That would lead to a 29-year career as City Engineer and Airport Manager. During that time, he became a registered land surveyor and licensed Professional Engineer.
Being airport manager was a perfect fit for Mac due to his love of aviation. He had already received his private pilot license in 1947 and had great dreams to make La Junta airport an International Jet Interchange. He testified multiple times before U.S. Congressional committees in both the House and the Senate and was invited by Presided Nixon for the signing of the Airport Airways Development Act of 1970.
During this time Mac stayed very involved with the Koshare’s as his three sons went through the program, all receiving their Eagle Scout.
After retiring from the City, he went into private business with this son Tim. Mac and Tim along with a third partner in 1988 created a project and construction management company, 2MS Incorporated, located in Fort Collins. The partners over the next 16 years provided construction services for commercial and residential construction in Northern CO.
In December of 1991 their endeavors expanded internationally beginning in the USSR that became Russia before their eyes while standing in Red Square. That first international experience expanded to 2MS having offices in Omsk, Russia; Costa Rica, and Malaysia.
Mac was a Koshare Key Man, President of Southern Colorado Golf Association 1982, President of La Junta Golf Club 1987, President of Rotary 1994. In 1994 Mac was awarded the Chamber of Commerce award for unselfish service to La Junta 2014 and in multiple production at Picketwire Theater.
He is survived by his three sons, James (Mary) of Murrieta, CA; Timothy (Deb) of Newport Beach, CA and Scott of Colorado Springs; two granddaughters, Christina (Chris) of Costa Mesa, CA; Kelli of San Francisco, CA; two nieces, Cynthia (Bob) and Nancy (Dale) and a nephew, Mike Moyer (Mary); great-granddaughter, Isabelle; and great-grandson, Isaiah both of Costa Mesa, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Joanne “Jan” McCune and sister, Patricia McCune.
A Celebration of life service will be held on Monday, June 6, 2022, 11:00 a.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel with Reverend Steve Culver of the Community Presbyterian Church of Rocky Ford officiating.
