James Robert Schmelzer, 71, of La Junta, Colorado, passed away Monday, December 25, 2023, at his La Junta home. James was born Friday, February 8, 1952, to Donald & Clara (Seel) Schmelzer in Boulder, Colorado.
Jim graduated from Boulder High. He joined the Navy and served his country for eight years. Upon discharge, he attended Otero Junior College earning an associate degree in nursing. He also earned a bachelor's degree in nursing. He was employed by the Veterans’ Administration at Fort Lyon and Pueblo, retiring after 30 years. Jim was involved in setting up Telemed with the VA. He received several awards while a VA employee. Jim was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, holding the office of Chairman of the Council for several years. He was a Koshare Key Leader and Head Dad.
Jim is survived by his wife of 32 years Gladys Schmelzer of the La Junta home; daughter, Cherie Chigma and Tracy (Scott) Gundersen; son, Jason (Kayla) Schmelzer; grandchildren, Nora & Sebatian Chigma; Bryden & Sharon Gundersen; brothers, Walter (Jaylene) Schmelzer; and Jerry (Larue) Schmelzer. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Steve Schmelzer; sister, Jeanette Pechak; niece, Shannon; and his sister-in-law, Adeline Cihla.
A memorial service will be Monday, January 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in La Junta with Reverend Rick Miller officiating.
