Jens W. Hansen

August 26, 1930 — May 14, 2012

Jens W. Hansen passed away at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Nursing Care Center on May 14, 2012 after a lengthy illness.

Jens was born to parent's Frank T. and Sigrid Jeppesen Hansen in their home on August 26, 1930 in Cheraw. He farmed and ranched in the Cheraw community raising registered Angus cattle for over 65 years. Jens started his herd with a 4-H catch-it-keep-it calf during high school and he and his father raised cattle together which Jens continued with his son, Scott.

Upon graduating from Cheraw High School in 1948, he attended La Junta Community College (OJC), playing football for the Rattlers. He attended Colorado State University until he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. After he returned home to resume his farming and cattle operation, he met and married Joan "Jodie" Evett on November 29, 1953. They were married and lived in the Cheraw Community their entire married life for over 57 years. Jodie preceded him in death in May of 2011.

Jens was a past 4-H leader, past member of the American Angus Association, Colorado Angus Association, and a charter member of the Southeast Colorado Association. As a teenager, he was confirmed at the Fowler Lutheran Church. Not afraid of hard work, ranching and farming was his life.

Mr. Hansen is survived by his four children; Shelby (Mike) Mustain of Cheraw; Shanyn Hansen of Troutville, VA; Lisa (Carl) Lindauer of Las Animas, and Scott (Wendy) Hansen of Cheraw. His seven grandchildren include; Brysen (Amber) Mustain of Colorado Springs; Rhianna (Randy) Price of Troutville, VA; Lauren Mustain of Cheraw; Rachel Hansen (Mike Waits) of La Junta; Trevor Wilson of Grand Junction; K. C. Hansen (Caitlin Hanagan) of Cheraw, and Derek Wilson of Fort Collins. He is also survived by four great grandchildren, Ashlynn Mustain, Dylan and Wyatt Price, and Serrie Hansen; his sister, Elizabeth (Robert) Horine of St. Louis, MO; sister-in-law, Martha Evett of La Junta, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Arkansas Valley Hospice Assoc., P.O. Box 408, La Junta, CO, 81050 direct or through the funeral home.
