John Albert Doherty, 82, of Kim, Colorado, died peacefully with family present in Springfield, Colorado on April 13.
John was born on the highway between Folsom and Raton, New Mexico near the TO headquarters to Joseph "Joe" Lawrence Doherty and Lorean "Tiny" Doherty. John attended school in Raton before transferring to Kim High School as a freshman. He loved living on the ranch and how easy it was to make friends in Kim. He was very proud of playing on the first Kim Mustang basketball team to qualify for State. He and Carolyn Lee Mayo married midway through their freshman year at Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas. They both competed on the rodeo team and made lifelong friends. After college, John and Carolyn returned home to help Tiny on the Mesa de Maya and Red Rocks ranches. They had Joe in 1967. John was very active in the agricultural community. He served on numerous boards and continued Tiny's legacy of conservation efforts. He and Carolyn were some of the first ranchers in the area to raise Red Angus cattle. John continued to play town team basketball until his 50's and rode horseback until he was 80. He also continued his passion for the Broncos. John and Carolyn were fixtures at ballgames and rodeos for decades watching their son, nieces, then grandsons participate.
John is preceded in death by his parents, infant son, sister, Betty Irene Wooten, and wife of 60 years, Carolyn. He is survived by son Joe (Lisa) Doherty, grandsons Sean (Siera) Doherty, Matthew (Jentry Patrick) Doherty, great-grandsons Jameson and Theodore Doherty, nephews Steve (Joy) Wooten, Doug Wooten, nieces Barbara (Randy) Pond, Dianne (Cody) Clark, Denise Goodrich, Lea (Shawn) McAvoy, Lynda (Karl Walk) Goodrich, brother-in-law Buddy (Kathy) Mayo, and numerous great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
