Joseph D. Lay

January 1, 1947 — December 13, 2015

Joseph
D. Lay, 68, of La Junta, passed away on December 13, 2015 at the Arkansas Valley Regional
Medical Center in La Junta, Colorado. He was born on January 1, 1947 to Wallace & Beth
(Atkinson) Lay in Garden City, Kansas. 
He married Katherine M. Vidrine on September 26, 1969.
 
He
graduated from La Junta High School in 1965. After completing two tours of duty
in the United States Army during Vietnam in 1968, he enrolled in Saint Mary’s
of the Plains College in Dodge City, Kansas where he obtained his Bachelors of Science and Adams State College in Alamosa where he earned his Master’s in
Physical Education. He taught and coached for 30 years and retired in 2000.
 
He is survived by his wife, Kathy of the La Junta home; children,
Thelma Beth “Thebe” Lay of La Junta; Caleb Joseph (Nikki) Lay of Parker, CO;
Jason (Tessa) Smith of Garden City, KS; and Ryan (Lori) Escareno of Garden
City, KS; grandchildren, Brooklyn and James Waddles Lay of La Junta; Cole,
Carson, and Kamdyn Lay of Parker, CO; Madison & Dakota of Garden City, KS;
and Conner Escareno of Garden City, KS. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Wallace & Bethalee Lay and his brother, Wallace V. Lay.
 
Visitation
will be Friday, December 18, 2015, from Noon to 3:00
p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel. The memorial services will be
Saturday, December 19,
2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the First
Church of the Nazarene with Pastor
Mike Beecham of the Crossroads Church
in Swink officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery with
Military Honors by the Rocky Ford Rifle Team.
 
In lieu of flowers those wishing to do so may make memorial
contributions to the Otero Junior College Women Athletic Program or the La
Junta High School Athletic Program direct or through the funeral home.
