Lydia Yergert

Lydia Yergert, 100, passed away on Friday, November 14, 2014. She was born July 9, 1914 to Henry and Catherine Miller. She grew up in the area with her family of 6 sisters and 3 brothers. On February 16, 1934 she married Paul Yergert. They were married 61 years and welcomed 5 children. Their children include: Clarence (Jane) Yergert, Ronald (Betty) Yergert, Robert (Dixie) Yergert, Nancy (Don) Brul and Leonard Yergert. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Paul, on October 28, 1995.

Lydia was a mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to many. Her home was always a welcoming place and she was an incredible cook and seamstress. Her recipes were largely in her head and she was known for her baked goods and many traditional German recipes that have been passed through her family. A cookbook called, “The Way Grandma Makes It” was created to try to capture her recipes. She was also known for her skills as a seamstress. She made many, many dresses for her daughter, daughters-in-law and granddaughters. Her church and her faith were also an important part of her life. She was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church and made many of the vestments, paraments, altar cloths and banners that still adorn the church.


In addition to her 5 children and their spouses, as is also survived by her brother John Miller, her sisters-in-law Bertha Sorenson, Betty Fleming and Lucille Yergert. She has 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in her name to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or the charity of your choice.

Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home & Arkansas Valley Crematory is in charge of arrangements.


Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 18th from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 621 Raton Avenue, La Junta.
