Evenson Mack Burtis, 84, of La Junta passed away on January 10, 2018 at his La Junta home. He was born to Al and Betty Burtis on March 24, 1933 in New York, NY.
After graduating from La Junta High School in 1949 Mack became a commissioned officer of the U.S. Naval Academy on June 4, 1954 and spent 20 years of service before retiring in 1974. Following retirement Mack returned to La Junta and joined his dad in owning and operating the La Junta Tribune-Democrat and Valley Offset, Inc. retiring again in 1995. During his time in La Junta he was active in the Picketwire Players, Jay’s Community Christmas Dinner, Otero Museum, Board of Urban Renewal, School District Accountability Committee, and Library Board and was the 2010 recipient of the Chamber’s Community Service Award. Mack loved his family especially attending his nieces and nephews sporting events.
Mack is survived by his brother-in-law, Jack Lowe of Fowler; nephew, John (Wanda) Lowe of Greeley and sons, Tate (Megan) Lowe and Taeven and Riley Lowe; nieces, Libby (Ed) Hiza of Swink and children Elise Hiza, Emily (Pat) Kohan and Justin (Kip) Hiza; Marty (Randall) Roberson of La Junta and children, Marta (Zach) Oquist, Reece Roberson, Leah Roberson and Savannah Vigil. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Al and Betty Burtis and sister, Betty Burtis Lowe.
Memorial services will be Friday, January 19, 2018, at 3:00 p.m., at Peacock Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Picketwire Players, Otero Museum or Jay’s Community Christmas Dinner.
