Recitation of the Rosary for Mathilda Marie "Tillie" Pieper, 91, Rocky Ford and formerly of Swink, will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick's Parish in La Junta. It will be followed at 2 p.m. by a funeral mass, also at the church with Father Matthew Wertin officiating.
Mrs. Pieper died, July 31, 2016, at Pioneer Health Care Center in Rocky Ford. She was born July 17, 1925, at Akron, Colorado, to Adolf and Anna Theurer. Following her graduation from eighth grade, Mrs. Pieper took nursing courses and became a nanny. It was while caring for a family in Akron that she met her future husband Walter.
The couple was married May 3, 1949, and made their home in Steamboat Springs on a ranch owned by the two. They moved to Kiowa following the birth of their first child, eventually coming to Rocky Ford where Mrs. Pieper and her husband farmed and raised some cattle. The Piepers moved to Swink in 1991 where Mrs. Pieper was active in many civic organizations including the Swink Garden Club and Swink Senior Citizens. She was also involved in various activities at her church, Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish in La Junta. A fall a year ago precipitated her move to Cottonwood Ridge in Rocky Ford where she resided until recently moving to PHCC.
Mrs. Pieper is survived by a brother, Joe Theurer of Akron, Colorado; children, Ray (Susan) Pieper of Rocky Ford, Larry (Dixie) Pieper of Colorado City, Steve Pieper of Craig, Kenny (Connie) Pieper of Akron and Mary (Ted) Pennington of Steamboat Springs; grandchildren, Jamin Pieper of Calhan, Jody (Amy) Pieper of Fowler, Margaret (Scott) Oswald of Kit Carson, Kristy Pennington and Kasey (Kieran) O'Halloran of Steamboat Springs also survive as do great-grandchildren, Kaley, Ty and Kory Pieper of Fowler, Ava and Jolie Oswald of Kit Carson and Kade O'Halloran of Steamboat Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter, infant son, Tommy, and a brother Ed Theurer and daughter-in-law, Sherry Pieper.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Arkansas Valley Hospice, PO Box 408, La Junta, CO, 81050 direct or through the funeral home.
