Modest Lane, 95, of Rocky Ford, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at the Pioneer Healthcare Center. Graveside services will be Saturday, May 16, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fairview Cemetery with Ron Skorick of the First Christian Church officiating.She was born on October 5, 1913, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma to Rufus L. & Jessie (Morgan) Chadwick. Modest was the granddaughter of Taylet Solomon & Ruth Estella (England) Morgan of Tahlequah, OK. Her grandfather Taylet was a Cherokee Indian survivor of the “Trail of Tears.” Modest held the Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood of the Cherokee Nation, as do her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She moved with her family from Oklahoma to Utleyville, Colorado in the 1930’s and then to Rocky Ford and La Junta area in 1936. She worked as a cook in the La Junta school system until her retirement in 1978. Modest was a member of the First Methodist Church and its affiliated circles in La Junta. She was a life member of the Rebekah Lodge # 33. She enjoyed going to the La Junta Senior Citizens Center especially to do quilting. She is survived by one sister, Violet Weber of Pritchett, CO; son, Lonnie Milburn of La Junta; daughters, Doris Powell of Walden, CO; Carroll Thompson of La Junta; ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; five great, great-grandchildren also survive. Modest was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, A.C. Milburn in 1951 and Horace Lane in 1992; two brothers, one sister, three infant siblings, one grandson, one great-grandson and daughter-in-law, Audrey Milburn.Peacock-Larsen Funeral Home & Arkansas Valley Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
