Otto David Young

August 20, 1922 — January 27, 2016

Longtime resident of the Fort
Bent Community, Otto David Young, died at his home on January 27, 2016 at the age of
93.  Otto was born on August
20, 1922 in Karval, Colorado
to Daniel and Lydia
(Hass, Wirth) Young.
Otto came to faith in the
Lutheran Church, having become baptized on February 25, 1923 at Saint Paul’s Lutheran
Church in Sugar City, Colorado; and then receiving his confirmation on May 16, 1937 at Saint Paul’s
Evangelical Lutheran Church east of La Junta, Colorado.  He was a member and past elder of Trinity
Lutheran Church
at the time of his death. He attended grade school at Fort
Bent School
and graduated from Cheraw High
School. 
After graduating, he moved to Denver, Colorado,
where he met June Barrier. Otto and June were married in Denver
on January 27, 1945 and thereafter
settled in La Junta, Colorado,
where he farmed for many years.
One of Otto’s interests was
restoring antique cars, including Model A Fords, Packards and Studebakers.  He was a charter member and past officer of
the Southern Colorado Antique and Classic Car Club, where he enjoyed showing
his restored cars at antique car shows. 
He won many awards for his craftsmanship. Otto also enjoyed bowling;
playing guitar and piano; woodworking; and restoring antique furniture, pump
organs and player pianos.  He was active
in many agricultural organizations.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma
June, who passed away July 2014; his mother, Lydia Dorsch; stepfather, George
Dorsch; brother, Bill Wirth; sisters Anna (Wirth) Freidenberger and Millie
(Wirth) Rowe; granddaughter, Chelsea Catherine Morgan; and great granddaughter,
Kaitlyn Grace Siefken. He is survived by a sister, Tillie (Wirth) Hammond of
Colorado Springs; daughters, Jean Scofield of Castle Rock, Colorado; Annie
(Barry) Alford of St. George, Utah; Alice (John) Morgan of La Junta; Marian
Young of La Junta; and Terri (Ken Ziegler) Young of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico;
grandchildren: Chris (Candice) Siefken of Granby, Colorado; Dave (Misty)
Siefken of Johnstown, Colorado; Erin (Daniel) Cook of Russell, Kansas; Nathan
(Jody) Morgan of La Junta, Colorado; Ryan Morgan of Westminster, Colorado; and
eight great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
Arkansas Valley Hospice or the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Peacock Larsen funeral home and Arkansas
Valley crematory is in charge of
arrangements.

 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Rick Miller officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery.
