Sharon Kay Phillips, 61, passed away on April 29, 2022, at her Cheraw home. She was born on May 20, 1960, in Craig, Colorado to James & Sharon (Hall) Johnson.
She graduated from La Junta High School with the class of 1978. She later went on to OJC and received her AS degree in 1980 and her ASN degree in 1982. She later attended University of Phoenix where she received her BSN in 1994 and her MSN in 1997 from the University of Colorado.
She married James Schmelzer in 1981 and to that union one daughter was born in 1986, Tracy Lynn (Schmelzer) Gunderson. She later married Galen Phillips on May 10, 1991; he preceded her in death on December 19, 2020.
Sharon worked as a nurse since 1982, at the Veterans Admin. Hospital in Ft. Lyon. Then later on with home health, Child Development Services and the Colorado Dept. of Corrections. She then went on to work as a Nurse Practitioner in 1997 working as a medical provider at Child Development Services and the Colorado Dept. of Corrections.
Sharon loved to cook and worked part-time with Inspiration Field’s Sweet Inspirations Catering. She was a wonderful person who could light up a room just by walking in. Even as a child, I was so proud of my mother when she got her MSN.
She is survived by her daughter, Tracy (Scott) Gunderson; stepdaughter, Tina (Shane) Leoffler; grandchildren, Jarrod (Callie) Leoffler, Kyle (Cecillia) Leoffler, Trent Leoffler, Bryden Schmelzer and Sharon Gunderson; great-grandchildren, Shadry and Lanham Leoffler and Paul Shane Leoffler. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved husband.
Funeral services will be Friday May 6, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday, May 5, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Ft. Lyon National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.
