Sherry Abney, 66, of La Junta passed away Nov. 1, 2013 at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center surrounded by her many friends. She was born on April 10, 1947 in Hallock, Minnesota to Charles & Eleanor (Homstad) Abney.
 
Sherry grew up in Northern Minnesota and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minnesota in 1965. She moved to La Junta in 1979 and attended Otero Junior College where she completed the nursing program and graduated as a Registered Nurse. She was employed at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center and worked on the 3rd Floor for over 30 years. Sherry loved nursing and she was a mentor to all and a teacher for students and new nurses. She received recognition as Associates of the month for her caring, no nonsense bedside care which earned her the nickname of “Sarge.”
 
Sherry is survived by her brother, LeRoy Abney of Bend, Oregon; best friend, Dianne McKinley of La Junta; many nieces & nephews and her beloved cats, Darcy & Button. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Rick and Jerry Abney.
 
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Arkansas Valley Hospice, PO Box 408, La Junta, CO, 81050 direct or through the funeral home.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, Nov.6, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the Peacock Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel. A reception will be held after service on Wednesday at the Aspen Room at the Casa Del Sol.
