Steve grew up in Waverly and Waterloo, Iowa and attended school there, until his family moved to La Junta in 1972. He attended school in La Junta from the 6th grade and graduated from La Junta High School with the class of 1979.

Hauling fuel, propane and the last 10 years he was able to work hauling crude oil in the Cheyenne Wells area. Steve was an avid hunter and loved the time he spent with friends out South of town even if it meant branding cows.
