Velma J. Merrick, 81, of La Junta, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center. Memorial services will be Tuesday, October 20 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cheraw United Methodist Church with Reverend Tom Dudley officiating. Inurnment will be at Ft. Lyon National Cemetery.
She was born February 6, 1928 in Elkhart, Indiana to Welmer & Ruth (Black) Yergin. She married Francis C. Merrick on June 30, 1951 in Columbia, SC.
Velma enjoyed gardening especially roses, painting & crafts, needlepoint, and fly-fishing in the Colorado’s mountains. She also was a volunteer at the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the Cheraw United Methodist Church, Cub Scout leader, and was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Francis of the La Junta home; sons, Bob (Tina) Merrick of Parker, Colorado; Don (Trish) Merrick of Donald, Oregon; James Merrick of Ft. Lupton, Colorado; sister, Ruth Alexander of Elkhart, Indiana; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Welmer & Ruth Yergin.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Cheraw United Methodist Church, 204 S. 4th St., Cheraw, CO, 81030 or American Cancer Society, 721 Carson Avenue, La Junta, CO, 81050, direct or through the funeral home.
