Velma Lee Leggott

December 21, 1924 — December 9, 2017

Velma Lee Leggott was born in Fowler on December 21, 1924 to James Arthur & Georgia Jeanette Littlewood. She departed this life on December 9, 2017 and is now safe in the arms of Jesus, enjoying a great reunion there with family and friends.
Velma was preceded in death by her brother George Littlewood. She is survived by George’s wife Polly Littlewood, brother Bob Littlewood and wife Linda, her children Barbara Fair & Mack, Jim Mason & Sammi, Gary Mason & Andrea, Sandy Robertson, and Larry Mason & Gale. Velma was blessed with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Velma went to Fowler public schools graduating with the class of 1942. On September 8th 1942 she married Calvin L. Mason in Raton, New Mexico. Calvin preceded her in death on October 10, 1976. They were blessed with five children; Barbara, Jim, Gary, Sandy and Larry.

After Calvin’s Army service during WWII and Velma’s civilian service work as a tail fin riveter, folding parachutes, etc., etc., they lived in Oklahoma where Calvin worked in the oilfields. They later took up farming in the Rocky Ford, Crowley, and Fowler communities. Velma was a homemaker which included baking, canning, sewing clothes, leading the 4-H club, and attending school activities.

Velma was the caregiver to her father and often helped her aunts & uncle during their later years.

After the passing of Calvin, Velma took on many extra projects, e.g., she became an Avon representative enabling her to make many new friends and stay in touch with old acquaintances. She volunteered her time at the Fowler Manor where she enjoyed doing the ladies nails and playing dominos with the residents.

In recent years her most precious time was spent helping with her 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and neighborhood kids, watching them grow up and supporting them in school.

During those years she also had the good fortune of traveling to many places in the States as well as Hawaii and Europe.

In 1991 Velma met (her very best Avon client) George Leggott, who she later married. He became her best friend and companion until his death in 2007.

Of all her accomplishments there were many – her church work at the First Baptist Church was the most fulfilling. She served in the choir, taught Sunday school, and was involved in the American Baptist Women ministries.

After George passed she continued to enjoy home and family for several years. During the past few months Velma was cared for at Fowler Health Care Center. The family appreciates the staff there, and the tender care provided. She lived a full and courageous life and will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.

A celebration of her life will be Friday, December 15, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Fowler. Interment to follow at the Fowler Cemetery.
