Celebration of life for William “Bill” Munger will be Friday, July 7, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the West Assembly of God Church in Fowler, CO with Pastor Daryl Johnson officiating. Bill passed away on Friday, June 30, 2017 after losing his battle from a tragic car accident on Friday, June 16, 2017.
Bill was the fourth child of James Wiley Munger and Sybil Davenport Munger of La Junta, CO. Bill was born on Nov 2, 1941 in La Junta where he attended schools until his graduation from La Junta High School in May 1959. He joined the US Navy in July of 1959 to start the career that would be his lifetime passion. He married the love of his life Judy Ann Barr on December 15, 1963. He retired from the Navy on Aug 17, 1979 and moved the family back to the Barr homestead on W. Santa Fe where they helped take care of Grandma Barr and to raise the kids around family. Bill and Judy celebrated over 48 years of marriage before her passing in February of 2012.
He is survived by his children, James William “Bill” Munger (Carol) of Pahrump, Nevada and Rhonda Jo Goodwin (Michael) of Fowler. Grandchildren; Megan (Travis) Goodwin-Sims, Marissa Munger, James William Munger, Jr (Kristin), Kyle Munger, Maggie Goodwin, and Michael Troy Goodwin, Jr. Great-grandchildren; Adrianna and Alexis Goodwin, Cameron Sims, and Baylee Munger. Siblings are Jeanne (Kenneth) Reeder of La Junta, Dennis (Pat) Munger of Sterling, CO, Douglas (Diane) Munger of Elberta, AL, and Cheryl (Dan) Wagner of La Junta. Brother-in-law, Bennie (Donna) Barr of Peyton, CO, and sister-in-law, Peggy Fankhouser of Springfield, CO. Many numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces survive.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, mother, infant brother James, eldest brother Ronald, mother-in-law Virginia Barr, brothers-in-law James Barr, Jeff Barr, and Ray Fankhouser.
He graduated from Pueblo Community College with an associate’s degree in Electronics in 1981 and opened Bill’s Stereo and TV repair so that he could be at every football, volleyball, basketball, baseball and track meet that the kids had in Colorado and beyond. Over the years, he also worked for Bradshaw’s Amoco, Bender Oil Co, McDonnell Douglas, Boeing, and finally retired for good from CCA in 2012.
Bill was known as a kind and loving man, full of great wisdom and advice. He enjoyed almost every sporting event and his family called him, MR. ESPN. He loved his family and gave his lifetime of support to servicemen and women. In lieu of flowers, donations to American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital (www.stjude.org).
